Description

On June 22, 1954, teenage friends Juliet Hulme—better known as bestselling mystery writer Anne Perry—and Pauline Parker went for a walk in a New Zealand park with Pauline’s mother, Honora. Half an hour later, the girls returned alone, claiming that Pauline’s mother had had an accident. But when Honora Parker was found in a pool of blood with the brick used to bludgeon her to death close at hand, Juliet and Pauline were quickly arrested, and later confessed to the killing. Their motive? A plan to escape to the United States to become writers, and Honora’s determination to keep them apart. Their incredible story made shocking headlines around the world and would provide the subject for Peter Jackson’s Academy Award–nominated film, Heavenly Creatures. A sensational trial followed, with speculations about the nature of the girls’ relationship and possible insanity playing a key role. Among other things, Parker and Hulme were suspected of lesbianism, which was widely considered to be a mental illness at the time. This mesmerizing book offers a brilliant account of the crime and ensuing trial and shares dramatic revelations about the fates of the young women after their release from prison. With penetrating insight, this thorough analysis applies modern psychology to analyze the shocking murder that remains one of the most interesting cases of all time.

Those who read Anne Perry's Victorian mystery series, have enjoyed plots filled with murder and catching the guilty party. The two series, one taking place in 1870s London and the other in 1900 London, have two different husband and wife crime solver teams. Very popular series from an author in her 70s, who lives in Scotland.Until a few years ago, when movie was released about a murder, the public was not aware that Anne Perry grew up in New Zealand, daughter of a weathy family and was involved in the real life murder. She participated in the murder of her friend's mother, beating her to death with a brick. The motive was a delusional mix of youth, fear of the friends being separated, and possible mental illness. When this was information was released to the public, you can imagine how shocked fans and the public were. She had served time in prison, been released, changed name and led a fairly "normal" life as did her friend. This book follows their lives and the crime in great detail, Especially the legal and political climate at time of 1950s trial. This was a very scandalous crime at the time with hints of homosexuality. Girls had a unusual shared make believe life which followed movie stars, and the desire to go to Hollywood to meet them. Diaries were damning and suggested the girls were both insane. There was also emphasis on the class difference between the two girls, Perry was from well to do family, and her friend was from a working class background (her parents, it was found during trial, were not even married, another scandal). Why they became friends with such different backgrounds, and how the legal system treated each one is part of the story.Very detailed and very interesting. Photos are fascinating, wish there were more.
