Description

The mercurial talents of the late, great John Dankworth (1927-2010) are celebrated in this Vocalion release, comprising JD's 1974 Movies 'n' Me album, marking the only occasion on which he recorded for the RCA label. As the title suggests, it was an opportunity for Dankworth to explore his considerable back catalogue of film themes, dressing them in attractive new arrangements that took full advantage of the rhythms and sounds of the 1970s. Of course, being a Dankworth album, the all-important jazz element is to the fore, the music best described as a happy marriage between big band, funk and jazz. The big band heard in Movies 'n' Me is made up of the cream of Britain's jazz and studio musicians of the 1970s, including Don Rendell and Alan Wakeman (tenor saxes/reeds), Kenny Baker (trumpet), Tony Hymas (keyboards), Ronnie Verrell (drums) and Paul Hart (bass guitar). John Dankworth himself is, of course, heard on alto sax, and proves that not only was he a wonderful composer but also a brilliant instrumentalist. Remastered from the original analogue tapes. First time on CD. STEREO. Track listing: Modesty Blaise Theme from 'Modesty Blaise' (Dankworth), Darling Theme from 'Darling' (Dankworth), Morgan Theme from 'Morgan A Suitable Case for Treatment' (Dankworth), Return from the Ashes Theme from 'Return from the Ashes' (Dankworth) All Gone Theme from 'The Servant' (Dankworth; Pinter), East St. Louis Boogaloo (Dankworth), Round Table Round (Dankworth), Herbie Walks Again (Dankworth), Long John (Dankworth), Look Stranger Theme from BBC TV series 'Look Stranger' (Dankworth), Whirly Birly Theme from BBC TV series 'Bird's Eye View' (Dankworth)

So little of John Dankworth's film scores were released on LP or CD, that you had to grab it on singles and in bits and pieces when, and wherever, it appeared. This collection features Dankworth's own cover versions of some of his best film music, and the instrumental arrangements here are perfect. While THE SERVANT is probably his most famous film theme, it certainly isn't overshadowed by his themes from DARLING, MORGAN and MODESTY BLAISE presented here; while his haunting theme from RETURN FROM THE ASHES is a masterpiece, and worth the price of this recording on it's own. This is a jazz album with a special interest in film themes, but the composer's clever arrangements are a tour-de-force of musical colors.Anyone wanting to seek out more of Dankworth's film music is recommended to check out the 2-CD set, SLIPPIN' AWAY, which includes more assorted, original tracks from his films. Harkit has released his cool, hip score for FATHOM, along with BOOM!, a John Barry score capped off by Dankworth's song for Georgie Fame, HIDEAWAY.
